Ah, here it is again. The day so notorious it's been marked as a cliche, a "Hallmark" holiday, even as some form of single awareness day. Oh February 14, Cupid has struck you with a lot of press.
This so-called day of love has been popularly celebrated with a wide array of hearts and other romantic portrayals of well, love. But if you're like me and find yourself not only in a long distance relationship, but also think that this ridiculous over-pouring of love is a bit overrated, then you're probably in search of a way to reverse this enamored holiday spirit. And before you get your panties in a bunch, let's make it clear that I'm not entirely bitter about Valentine's day, I simply just think that the people around me deserve to be loved--and to be shown that love--more than a day a year.
Don't celebrate it at all. There is nothing wrong with letting your inner grumpy cat win. I mean, so long as you're not totally killing the vibe for the people around you, it's totally fine to sit out Valentine's day and kind of just go along with your day, as you should.
Comic sans vday cards. These babies have been circulating the internet for quite awhile now, haven't they? There's something so magnetic about them, and I think that it's the sort of nostalgia they bring in--a sort of nostalgia with a side of a plot twist. Remember those days in elementary school, when we would exchange classroom Valentine cards? It would be paired with either candy, or probably a sticker or temporary tattoo of a Transformer or Spongebob Squarepants, and it would be cheesy and cute because it'd be something about cherishing cute little friendships? Well, I like to think of these comic sans vday cards as a sort of homage to that phase in our innocence, except now they're quite... humorous and mature at the very least. I'm sort of a sucker for these things, because they're awfully clever and though often inappropriate and risque, how the hell am I supposed to take comic sans seriously. If I were to give something out on Valentine's day it'd probably be these because it's not just that they're funny, but because there is so much of them you can practically pick one that best suits your lovers.
for the flappy bird phenomena that is taking society by storm |
my friend Nikki posted this one on my wall and I loved it haha |
Netflix. Expand your tv show and movie resume by making a date all night long with Netflix. Hell, pair it with ice cream and pizza. And if you need any ideas here are my lists:
I like to geek out about these shows because I've watched them:
- Freaks and Geeks
- How I Met Your Mother
- Parks and Recreation
- Supernatural
- Dexter
- American Horror Story
- Bones
- Cake Boss
- Adventure Time
- Once Upon a Time
- Family Guy
- Game of Thrones, Workaholics (not on Netflix :( )
I have yet to geek out about these shows because I want to watch them:
- Sherlock
- Scandal
- Mad Men
- Arrested Development
Cherish the people around you. You don't have to give in to the exclusivity of couple city romance on Valentine's day. So you're single? You're in a long distance relationship? Well, go on and channel all that love to the people who are around you! Make them feel appreciated and treasured because you know your sanity would not be the same without them. Give them all those comic sans vday cards or better yet diy up something cute and crafty and personalized to gift them--how about a cute little mason jar care package? C'mon, you know that's cute.
Girls day. This one is my favorite. Have a girls day! Or if you don't identify as a girl, then just go out or kick back with your rad group of friends. Do something new, explore something exciting--all for the hell of it. To be honest, Valentine's day to me has become a sort of adventure to redefine it's societal constructs for myself, and I like being antithetical by spending it with my girls. Last year, Joana, Thea, Samm and I did an Anti-Valentine's lookbook on top of catching up on each others lives. It was nothing short of lovely and there was never a dull moment. Watch it here:
This Valentine's day, my girl friends and I are actually planning on getting together and kind of just fill each other with positive vibes. What are you doing for the notorious holiday? Feel free to share with me below!
